How to distinguish whether the ginseng is wild or cultivated

Most of the ginseng on the market now is cultivated ginseng. Wild ginseng has been largely extinct after being dug up in large quantities. We know the difference between wild ginseng and cultivated ginseng from the previous article. Whether in terms of nutrition or taste, the value of wild ginseng far exceeds that of cultivated ginseng. So how do you distinguish whether the ginseng you have bought or are about to buy is wild ginseng or cultivated ginseng?

Identify the whiskers: The whiskers of wild ginseng are flexible and not easy to break, with good stickiness. There are small bumps on the whiskers, commonly known as "pearl dots". If the whiskers are white, tender and crisp (commonly known as "water whiskers"), it is likely to be cultivated ginseng.

Check the reed head: The reed head of wild ginseng is long and has different shapes. There are two-section reeds, three-section reeds, thread reeds and goose neck reeds.

There are often horse tooth-shaped or cylindrical reed bowls (stem marks) on the reed head, and they are arranged in an orderly manner. The reed head is slightly bow-shaped, with the reed bowl stem and root imprint on the top.

Distinguish the ginseng body: The taproot of wild ginseng is usually thick, old skin, deep lines and solid texture. The body is agile, rhombus or cylindrical, the body surface is yellow-brown or gray-brown, the horizontal lines are fine and deep, and the texture is hard and heavy.

Check the skin of wild ginseng‌: The skin of wild ginseng is usually tender, smooth, tight, and yellow-brown or gray-brown. The skin has fine and deep horizontal lines, and the texture is tight and tender. If the skin is pale and the horizontal lines are rough and shallow, it is unlikely to be pure wild ginseng‌.

Inspect the ginseng lines‌: Wild ginseng has fine and deep screw-shaped horizontal lines at the top of the hair root. If the horizontal lines are rough, shallow or discontinuous, it may be cultivated ginseng.

‌Smell the ginseng‌: Wild ginseng has a strong grassy and ginseng aroma, which is unique and lasting. If the smell is light or has a strange smell, it may be a counterfeit product or poor quality‌.

‌Hand feel weight‌: Real wild ginseng has a large density and feels heavy. If it feels light, it may be a cultivated ginseng.

‌Microscopic observation of slices‌: Observe the tissue structure of the slices under a microscope. Genuine wild ginseng has a unique cell structure and lines‌.

‌Professional certification‌: Obtaining an authentication certificate from an authoritative organization is also a reliable method to ensure that the purchase channel is formal, and it can be authenticated by institutions such as the National Ginseng and Antler Product Quality Supervision and Inspection Center.
